Overview
A baby bib can be quickly, easily and inexpensively made at home. By using a hand towel you can make a strong, absorbent and washable bib with no need to finish the edges. The method describes how to sew a simple, plain bib but can be customized with applique, binding and color choices.
Step 1
Using a felt pen, mark a point on the towel that is in the middle widthwise and 1/3 from the top of it lengthwise. Draw a 5 in. diameter circle with this point as its center and cut out the circle to leave a round hole in the towel.
Step 2
Take the strip of stretch fabric and fold it in half along its width, then sew the two short ends together with a 1/4 in. seam allowance to form a loop.
Step 3
Fold the loop of stretch fabric in half along its length with the opposite sides together. Place one pin at the seam on the loop and three pins spaced evenly around it, dividing the loop into quarters. Place four pins around the circular hole in the towel to mark quarter sections in the same way, with the first pin at the center back of the hole.
Step 4
Pin the stretch fabric loop to the edge of the circular hole on the towel with the raw edges together and the seam on the loop at the center back of the hole. Match the four marker pins on the loop with the four marker pins on the towel to ensure that the loop is stretched evenly around the circle. You will have to stretch the loop a little.
Step 5
Using straight stitches, sew the loop to the circular hole around its entire perimeter. Press the seam allowance toward the back of the towel around the neck, then topstitch around the neck through all the layers.

tip
Baby bibs are a good project for making use of old towels. A large bath towel can be cut into smaller pieces to make several bibs.

Different edge treatments can be used to change the look of the bibs--you could bind the edges with bias tape or cut them into a fringe.

Simple applique shapes can be added to the front of the bib for decoration.
