Overview
Remodeling a kitchen can be costly, but a new kitchen will enhance its look and your home's market value. You don't need to remove and replace everything in your old kitchen to give it a fresh new look. You can do several remodeling tasks, such as painting the existing tile a new tile, one at a time.
Step 1
Clean the tile thoroughly with a commercial tile cleaner that has a mild abrasive to clean the tile and remove at least some of the glossy surface of the tile so the paint will stick better.
Step 2
Sand the tiles with a handheld sander and 220-grit sandpaper to remove the existing gloss of the tile without damaging and scratching it. Be thorough; spots missed by the sander will not hold paint very well.
Step 3
Prime the tiles with the oil-based primer after rinsing all the dust from the tiles. Apply two coats of primer to make sure the tile is ready for the paint. Take your time and apply the primer to each tile in a thin, consistent layer. Follow manufacturer's recommendations on how long to wait before applying the second coat. Once both coats have dried, use the sandpaper to gently remove any blotches of primer the brush or roller may have caused.
Step 4
Paint the tiles using an oil-based paint. Apply two or three separate thin-layered coats to ensure that the paint stays on the tile. If you hurry and try to paint the whole project in one thick coat, the paint may not stay on the tile.

tip
Take this opportunity to clean and repair the grout work around the tiles. If you don't fix things and then paint over them, you will have to paint everything again if you decide to later make repairs.

warning
Do not paint any tile that is regularly in contact with water. Tile in the bathroom around the tub or shower will not stay painted, even when you've followed all instructions and taken your time. The water will simply wash the paint away.
