Best Teeth-Cleaning Supplies

Overview
The American Dental Association recommends brushing teeth no less than twice a day. It is also suggested to floss at least once a day. Brushing and flossing prevents cavities and removes the plaque that forms on teeth and beneath gums. Cleaning the mouth also prevents and eliminates halitosis.
Toothbrush
A toothbrush is used to remove food particles from the surface of teeth. Brushing also removes acid-producing plaque and prevents cavities and gum disease.
Toothpaste
This is a paste or gel that can remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth. Toothpaste helps eliminate bad breath. Toothpaste that contains fluoride helps prevent tooth and gum disease
Floss
Dental floss is a waxy string used to clean between teeth. Since a toothbrush cannot properly access these tight spaces, it is important to floss at least once a day. Floss can remove plaque and food.
Dental Pick
A dental pick, which resembles a harpoon, is a sharp, hand-held tool used to remove tough plaque. Plaque is a sticky, brownish substance that sticks to teeth and can cause tooth and gum disease. A dental pick can scrape away plaque from the surface of the tooth and beneath the gum line.
Mouthwash
Many mouthwashes contain fluoride to prevent cavities, clean the mouth and kill plaque. Mouthwash is also used to eliminate bad breath, also known as halitosis. Mouthwash can be used several times a day.
