World's largest cinnamon roll baked for charity
OCTOBER 12, 2005By Happynews Staff Mill Creek, Wash. - Hopelink, the largest human-services agency on the Eastside, serving homeless and low-income families in east and north King County will be the recipient of all contributions raised by the House of Bread bakery when they bake the world's largest cinnamon roll. The attempt will be submitted to Guinness for a world record status on October 15, 2005, with portions of the giant cinnamon roll being cut and served to the crowd estimated to be hundreds of observers at The House of Bread bakery located in Mill Creek Town Center, 15224 Main Street, Suite 105 in downtown Mill Creek. In preparation for this event, House of Bread has obtained a record claim number and a set of guidelines from Guinness, and has determined that all of the guidelines can be fulfilled. Officials are required by Guinness to certify the ingredients, edibility, size and weight of the giant cinnamon roll. House of Bread has obtained commitments from two volunteers from the Washington State Department of Agriculture to perform these certifications. To bake this single-piece cinnamon roll, House of Bread solicited the services of Ottercraft, a Kingston boat builder, to fabricate a six-foot square baking sheet that slides into the rotating rack oven. A practice cinnamon roll was baked on August 13 which was served to the public following an informal weigh-in. The practice roll weighed more than 250 pounds, measured six feet across and was cooked completely through.A requirement for the Guinness Book of World Records is that the event be done in public. This announcement is also an invitation for the public to view the construction of the cinnamon roll beginning at 9:00 am and going to 11:00 am, with the baking of the roll from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, removal from the oven, cooling, icing and formal weigh-in will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, and the public will be invited to eat over 1,000 pieces of the cinnamon roll at 2:00 pm. House of Bread is suggesting a minimum charitable donation of $2 for each piece of the cinnamon roll be donated to Hopelink, and will be offering raffle tickets for prize gift certificates donated by Mill Creek Town Center vendors to be drawn by the mayor of Mill Creek, Terry Ryan, every half hour during the event. All proceeds raised will go to Hopelink to help homeless and low-income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities this holiday season. Free samples of bread and coffee will be given out throughout the event. For children, there will be a ventriloquist and the "Cinnamon Roll Olympics," played with cinnamon rolls instead of balls or pucks, with prizes for the winners.House of Bread (www.houseofbreadwa.com) is a retail micro-bakery located in the new Mill Creek Town Center, which bakes breads and other baked goods from scratch six days a week.
