ShelterBox and Young ShelterBox are delighted to announce the launch of new educational resources.
With disasters hitting the headlines yet again, there could not be a better time to raise awareness of what they are, how they affect people and why there is a need for help. ShelterBox is aiming to achieve this with the launch of its innovative and interactive educational resources.
The resources are part of the Young ShelterBox (YSB) project, which provides young people with the opportunity to explore and learn about the world through the eyes of a front line disaster relief charity.
YSB manager Emma Nichols said, "ShelterBox’s disaster relief work provides a rich source of material, perfect for the classroom. Our cross-curricular teaching resources, covering key stages one to three, are now available.
"These will give young people the tools to delve into the world of natural and manmade disasters and understand how they affect those individuals and communities involved."
The new resources and activities encompass global themes which will challenge youngsters to perceive the world beyond their own eyes – encouraging involvement and positive contribution. There are five original challenges, for ages 5 through to 14, which provide the platform for exploration and discovery, while delivering areas of the national curriculum in a creative and diverse way.
The activities can be accessed here. They have been developed with ease of use in mind and contain everything needed to be run from one place. Leaders of youth groups, as well as teachers, will also be able to use the challenges to encourage participation and interactivity.
Emma added, "ShelterBox is such a simple concept and children right across the board have taken it to their hearts. This initiative will help them gain a deeper understanding of the global stories behind the big green box."
