(Ed Rode/CMT) The Judds reunite at LP Field during the CMA Music Festival in Nashville on June 13, 2009.
Snapshots from the Media Room at CMA Awards: The Judds
NOVEMBER 12, 2009Bob Doerschuk, Country Music AwardsNine rows deep and about 12 seats across, journalists filled the long tables that faced the CMA Awards backdrop, with a line of cameras on risers shooting over these scribes. From this vantage point, members of the press enjoyed unique glimpses into the reactions of winners and illustrious presenters at the 2009 CMA Awards. Their reports and pictures would filter instantly or immediately after the show to readers around the world. Even so, to actually sit in witness to those who truly owned the evening, nothing could beat being in the house as history unfolded.
The Judds
The Judds retain enormous glamour, but this being a landmark year - the 25th anniversary of their selection as Horizon Artist of the Year - they emitted a particularly compelling charisma. In a sense, all they had to do was stand in the spotlight, but comments on the current scene were candid as much in what they did not say. When asked, for example, to note how Country Music has improved since their ascension in 1984, Naomi smiled enigmatically and replied, "Well, since you said "for the better," I'll let Wynonna take it." And then her daughter, while first expressing pleasure at the abundance of talent on the scene today, echoed Naomi's affirmation of the value of tradition by stating her belief that technical advances in the studio can't substitute for the unique talents of those who laid the foundations for this music. "To me it's not about that stuff; it's about personal integrity and being defined from within."
They reverted to being elusive, though, when asked about whether they'd be working together again, as a follow-up to their surprise reunion at the CMA Music Festival. They were momentarily silent, and then Naomi allowed, "We're dodging this question because we're just talking at this point. CMA Fest was a trip - 50,000 people singing "Love Can Build a Bridge" back at you. We're spontaneous, if you haven't noticed. We'll see. Stay tuned."Read more of the CMA report from Bob Doerschuk: www.cmaawards.com/live_reports
