The space shuttle Atlantis rose through a cloudy Florida sky on Monday, beginning a mission aimed at delivering tons of spare parts to the International Space Station.
"We wish you good luck, Godspeed, and we'll see you just after Thanksgiving," launch director Mike Leinbach told Atlantis' crew minutes before launch.

"We're excited to take this incredible vehicle for a ride and meet up with another incredible vehicle, the International Space Station," shuttle commander Charlie "Scorch" Hobaugh replied.
Atlantis' 11-day flight will keep the astronauts in orbit through Thanksgiving. They will unload 27,250 pounds (12,360 kilograms) of pumps, gyroscopes, tanks and other parts, as well as science experiments. The equipment will be stored on special platforms known as ExPRESS Logistics Carriers, which are to be hooked up to the space station's truss assembly.
Three spacewalks will be conducted to carry out the work.
