Students from Midland’s Fannin Elementary were recently rewarded for sending a U-Haul full of school supplies, dishes, linens and children’s clothing, among other items, to Barbers Hill Intermediate School in Mont Belvieu, Texas after they heard of the devastation of Hurricane Ike. Principal Barbara Ponder said tears came to her eyes when she heard of Fannin’s plans to help her school.
Ponder said her 625 fifth- and sixth-grade students missed 12 days of school after the September storm hit. Water was coming into the classrooms and everyone tried to grab personal items and teaching materials. Depending on where you were standing, water was 6 to 8 inches deep.
“You can imagine the number of things that were lost,” Ponder said, adding that the storm did $2 million in damage to her school alone.
Barbara Ponder visited Fannin to offer her thanks to the school in person, and got Blue Bell Ice Cream to donate 750 ice cream sandwiches, which were given to the Fannin Elementary School students as they left the gym, along with thank-you notes for each youngster and a plaque for the school.
Fannin math/science teacher Linda Thornton said it was an honor to have Ponder visit. “I know more than anything that the Fannin students felt good being able to do something,” Thornton said. “It’s neat to hear firsthand what they personally went through. They were very excited about bringing things. They knew what was going on on the other side of the state. It had a great impact on them.”
