ProjectGreenGift.com, a division of MXenergy Inc., is a carbon dioxide offset program, where those looking for a perfectly green gift can purchase a tree to be planted by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai (CSK) Tribes in the State of Montana. The CSK Tribes are comprised of the Bitterroot Salish, the Pend d'Oreille and the Kootenai tribes.
Each recipient will receive an Environmental Remediation
Certificate from Sustainable Forestry Management Ltd. (SFM) certifying that trees planted will offset CO2 emissions for one year.
Emissions of carbon dioxide resulting from human activity are a chief cause of global warming. A significant portion of these emissions come from energy consumption for transportation, home heating and home electricity production. Forests absorb and store carbon dioxide efficiently and provide an opportunity for homeowners and businesses to voluntarily offset the environmental damage caused by energy consumption. Through photosynthesis, trees take CO2 out of the air, replacing it with life-giving oxygen.

In 2001, SFM purchased the carbon rights to an area within the CSK Tribal lands that had been destroyed by fire. The CSK Tribe has used the proceeds for the reforestation of the area (seedlings and cost of planting). CSK Tribes maintain the carbon stock in the land and deliver a report attesting to the carbon sequestration and projections thereof every five years.
