While the new stimulus plan seems to be mostly focused on banks and car companies, the new bill which will go to a congressional vote on Wednesday will allocate a significant amount of money to education. The plan would allot $150 billion for new federal spending to be given to the nation’s school districts, universities and child care centers.
Education, which has in the past, has been left to the care of local and state governments will now see a great portion of its funding coming from Washington. This money will go towards the renovation and modernization of schools as well as student grants. The money will also help finance mandates specified in Bush’s No Child Left Behind act. The new funds will allow thousands of districts to avoid cutbacks and turn around many more possible layoffs. To read more about what Washington is doing to help education go here.
