Man Survives 4 Days On Mountain Dew
FEBRUARY 18, 2010David Johnson, Citizen JournalistA business trip through the mountains of the Rio Grande National Forest in Colorado took a turn for the worst when the driver’s SUV got stuck in a snow drift. Jason Pede then survived for 4 days drinking nothing but Mountain Dew and melted snow. A local resident had directed him on a short-cut through the mountains, but the snow soon got too deep. When Pede decided to turn around and go back, he got stuck.
When asked why he didn’t leave the car and walk out he said: “I’m a driver for a living, so I know I’m out of shape --- and 7 miles is a long trip!”
To stay warm, Pede rationed out the fuel, starting the car every so often and then turning it off. He also burned wood outside the car to stay warm. When the gasoline ran out and he had heard nothing on the radio about a search party looking for him, he went ahead and hiked out to a highway. That is when passersby found him collapsed. The Pede family says they haven't been very religious, but the experience has brought them closer together. It has changed their lives, and they are glad they've been given a second chance.
