Company Profits from Charitable Work
FEBRUARY 04, 2009Jill Harris, Happy News StaffWhile most Americans can tell you the basic function of Unicef, Vestergaard-Frandsen is hardly a household name. Its work however, is felt globally. Established in 1951 in Denmark as a uniform-making company, Vestergaard-Frandsen has now made non-profit work their sole purpose. Their products are used internationally in under-developed countries, disaster areas and refugee camps. Their recent developments include mosquito nets with insecticide, tent tarps that kill flies and the LifeStraw, a filter worn around the neck that makes filthy water drinkable. The company began its work when Torben Vestergaard-Frandsen made a deal with the Swedish military to buy a million yards of expensive wool, which was later used for blankets in Rwanda and Kurdistan.
