Dentists Fill a Hole In Service To Needy Children
FEBRUARY 09, 2009David Johnson, Citizen JournalistTo mark the seventh annual "Give Kids A Smile" Day, more than 350 Wisconsin dentists and their staffs donated an estimated $622,000 in oral health care and education to 5,500 of the state's low-income children last week. A number of Northeastern Wisconsin dentists and dental staff participate in the event.
Staff members at MAC Dental in Green Bay saw 42 children from Ashwaubenon and Green Bay schools from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., doing everything from routine cleaning to a few teeth extractions. School nurses selected children who could most benefit from a free dental visit.
"It makes a little difference, but we need to have more access for these kids," said Dr. Sarah Heuer, another partner at MAC Dental. "When I visit schools, I see a lot of kids who are in pain."
In addition to the services, staff members sent each child home with a bag of dental goodies — toothpaste, toothbrush, floss — and instructions for home care.
