A special young Munster girl recently experienced her one dream come true thanks to Kids Wish Network, an organization in Florida that grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. 13-year-old Emma, who suffers from a number of serious medical problems, couldn’t believe it when her wish to meet singer and actress Jessica Simpson came true!
In June of 2004, Emma was diagnosed with a hereditary condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis. FAP causes polyps to grow in the colon, of which 100% of the time, they develop into cancer. Last summer, Emma’s doctors removed almost her entire colon and then just last February, another examination revealed that the remaining portion of her colon was full of pre-cancerous cells. In addition, Emma has cerebral palsy.
Emma’s journey to meet her idol in New York City began soon after her mother, Patricia, learned about Kids Wish Network from a friend. Emma had been struggling for several years with her health and Patricia was hopeful that she would qualify for a wish with the charity. After all she had been through Emma definitely deserved something special to look forward to. Patricia submitted Emma’s name to Kids Wish Network and began the application process. No long after that, the family was thrilled to learn that Emma had indeed been approved for a wish. A huge fan of Jessica Simpson, Emma didn’t hesitate when asked for her number one wish: she wanted to meet the star in person.
Emma’s Kids Wish Network wish coordinator, Lora, quickly began the arrangements to make her wish an extra special one! She not only secured airline tickets to New York City where Jessica Simpson was filming a movie, she also made hotel reservations for the family in Manhattan, arranged for fun activities in the city, and most importantly, secured a personal meet and greet between Emma and Jessica.
Soon after arriving in New York, Emma and her family checked into the lovely Roosevelt in Manhattan. Patricia said the hotel was breathtaking. “They put us in a suite. It was just beautiful! And everyone there was so nice to us.” Emma spent her first afternoon in the Big Apple exploring and later that night enjoyed a delicious dinner at Planet Hollywood. But her thoughts were never far from what would take place the very next day.
The morning of her wish, Emma woke up with butterflies. “She was so nervous!” laughed Patricia who noted that Emma had a plan for remembering what to ask in case nerves got the better of her. “She wrote down questions to ask Jessica. But she only got to four!” However, with the whirlwind adventure ahead of her, Emma nearly forgot how anxious she was.
A sleek limousine arrived at the hotel to whisk the family away to the set location of Jessica’s upcoming movie. Patricia said that Emma was overwhelmed. “When we got to where they were filming, there was a director’s chair waiting for her. Then, during the break, Jessica called Emma over and gave her a big hug in front of everyone. That was a big deal!” Patricia smiled. But it wasn’t all work and no play. Jessica had much more in store for her young fan.
Patricia was shocked when Jessica invited the family to her hotel room. “It was crazy. Emma was so happy!” The two spent time getting to know each other, chatting and taking pictures. “Jessica was really so down to earth,” said Patricia. “She put Emma right at ease. She was definitely very warm and nice!” They also exchanged gifts, with Jessica giving Emma a big box full of cds, dvds with concert footage, and some pictures and posters. Everything was signed. “It was really so sweet of her to bring Emma a gift,” said Patricia who was clearly touched. In turn, Emma presented Jessica with a special, if not unusual, hat! It was an Easter hat adorned with candy and other colorful trinkets. “Emma made it,” laughed Patricia. “And she was so happy when Jessica put it on!”
Emma returned home from her trip exhausted, but with plenty of pictures to show her friends at school and even more amazing memories. “It was totally beyond my expectations,” said Patricia. “My daughter has been smiling for a week. It felt so good to see her so happy! It was just fantastic!” She said she was also enormously grateful to Lora and Kids Wish Network. “Lora is so nice – we had a lot of fun with her! This was truly a wish come true for Emma!”
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Emma’s wish extra special: Central Park Zoo, Circle Line Tours, Connolly’s Restaurant, Planet Hollywood, The Roosevelt Hotel, US Limousine, and of course, Ms. Jessica Simpson!
