Liberty Mutual Launches the Responsibility Project

Updated: 4/16/2008

BOSTON

Liberty Mutual today announced the launch of "The Responsibility Project," a multi-faceted, branded-entertainment program that uses short films and online content in a user-friendly forum focused on the decisions that confront people trying to "do the right thing." By experiencing The Responsibility Project, individuals will have the opportunity to participate in online conversations about responsibility and also review live-action and animated film shorts on the project's online community, www.ResponsibilityProject.com.

"The Responsibility Project uses entertaining content such as short films as creative interpretations about the decisions people face when trying to 'do the right thing'," said Steve Sullivan, Liberty Mutual Group, Senior Vice President, Communications. "Just as the directors of the short films have provided their own unique point of views in the making of these films, individuals who participate in the online discussion also can share their own perspectives and definitions on personal responsibility."

This discussion will take place on The Responsibility Project's online community, which is a user-friendly resource and forum for parents, educators, community leaders and anyone interested in participating in this conversation. The site, www.ResponsibilityProject.com, features:

· Independent film shorts about the decisions people face trying to "do the right thing"

· Discussion guides to accompany each short film for parents, students, teachers or any fan of the films

· Interviews with individuals associated with the films

· Articles and blog postings from the site's editor, veteran journalist Kathy McManus

· Resources such as links to other sites that focus on the topic of personal responsibility, as well as books and articles recommended by members of the online community

Individuals who register for this free online community have the opportunity to join the responsibility discussion by posting blogs, participating in surveys, creating widgets to link to other social networking sites, and registering for regular content updates via E-mail or a RSS feeder.

Film shorts will be updated on The Responsibility Project's Web site every few weeks. The first two short films, "Transit" and "Table Guardian," focus on the actions the characters take in two different situations. In "Transit," a passenger on public transportation must decide his next step after witnessing a crime and facing the perpetrator, while "Table Guardian" takes place in an urban coffee shop. Each film is accompanied by a short discussion guide for those interested in sharing the film and sparking an in-person conversation in a classroom, home or community.

"As a long time journalist, I've seen the issue of responsibility debated and contested all over the world, by the powerful and powerless," said McManus, editor of ResponsibilityProject.com. "Some ignore the topic with ease and others spend a lifetime pondering; however, everyone defines responsibility in their own way. The Responsibility Project gives everyone the opportunity to share their own experiences and expectations. By joining the conversation, we hope the online community's members can test themselves, debate with others, get inspired and give inspiration."

The concept for The Responsibility Project is rooted in Liberty Mutual's television commercials which feature the tagline, "Responsibility. What's Your Policy?" The ads feature individuals acting responsibly in small ways and promote Liberty Mutual's approach to business and customers.

"We never imagined these television ads would receive the overwhelming, positive response they have," said Sullivan. "We heard from thousands of customers, employees and the general public, including people whose professions - teachers, community workers - are automatically associated with the term, responsible. The Responsibility Project will take the theme of responsibility a step further by becoming a forum for conversation on this topic through entertaining content."

Liberty Mutual is currently exploring plans to take The Responsibility Project's message to the small screen via television programming in Fall 2008. For more information about The Responsibility Project, visit www.ResponsibilityProject.com.
