Qwest Employees Volunteer with Junior Achievement

DENVER

Qwest teamed up with Junior Achievement - Rocky Mountain, Inc. (JA), today to bring financial literacy and work readiness skills to 2,175 local students in Denver-area schools, making Qwest Junior Achievement's largest "JA-in-a-Day" program partner.

As part of an ongoing partnership with JA, and in celebration of April as national "Financial Literacy Month," Qwest adopted five local schools for the day, where 174 employee volunteers presented JA's interactive curriculum in English and Spanish to 87 classrooms simultaneously. Through this program, Qwest volunteers spent a total of 1,000 hours in local classrooms in one day, bringing valuable life skills to students at Centennial K-8, College View Elementary, Doull Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Merrill Middle Schools.

"JA-in-a-Day is an opportunity for Qwest employees to help students open their minds to real world experiences," said Steve Davis, senior vice president of public policy for Qwest. "Qwest is pleased to support Junior Achievement and help impact the future leaders of Colorado for a lifetime."

JA programs are designed to address three issues of critical importance to the future of our state -- financial literacy, dropout prevention, and workforce readiness of our students by placing volunteers from the business community into classrooms to serve as role models to students. The program's objectives are to help students understand the relevance of staying in school, teach them to manage their money wisely, and equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to go to college or find and keep a good job after high school.

"We're so pleased to partner with Qwest on this important endeavor, and want to thank the many volunteers from Qwest who served as role models to local students today - children who, with the right combination of education, encouragement and inspiration, will grow up to be our next generation of leaders," said Robin Wise, President and CEO of Junior Achievement - Rocky Mountain, Inc.
