New Site Celebrates All Things Horses
APRIL 29, 2009Melanie Dunham, Guest ColumnistDid you know there are over 250 breeds of horses in the world? Although, when you learn that there are over 70,000 dog breeds in the world, 250 seems practically minute in comparison.
In terms of overall appearance, horses are pretty similar across the board, unlike dogs, which vary remarkably in size and coloring. Still, there’s something magical about horses that sets them apart from other animals.
Common breeds found in the United States include the American Quarter Horse, Arabian, and Thoroughbreds. Rare breeds also found in the U.S. include the Bashkir Curly Horse, named such for obvious reasons, and the Knabstrup, which is spotted very much like a Dalmation. Let us not forget miniature horses, easily a favorite among the preschool set, and Pintos, my personal pick for their spotted coats. What’s your favorite horse breed?
