Supermarket for the Poor Opens in Serbia
APRIL 29, 2009BBC It looks like a normal supermarket but a special store has opened in Serbia for people in financial hardship. The shelves are stocked with unbranded produce and on average prices are 20-30% cheaper. Those who qualify to shop there include people who are unemployed or on wages lower than 200 euros a month, as well as pensioners who receive less than that sum.
To prevent anyone abusing the system, the amount of goods that can be bought on each shopping trip is limited - so for example you can not buy more than 3 bottles of cooking oil at a time. BBC's Helen Fawkes went along the aisles to see what was on offer.
