Aethon, Inc., a leader in affordable autonomous mobile robots for practical business applications, announced today that the inspiration for the customized Make-A-Wish J.R. TUG - Jericho Rajninger - will be visiting its headquarters.
Make-A-Wish is a non-profit organization that grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical illnesses. Aethon donated the custom-made TUG(R) to UCSF Children's Hospital at UCSF Medical Center to help Make-A-Wish fulfill Jericho's request for a train-like robot that delivers medication to children.
The TUG, a mobile autonomous robot that transports medical equipment and supplies, was transformed for Make-A-Wish to resemble a train from the outside, and its voice recording features legendary actor Don LaFontaine. It also includes a doll dressed up as a train conductor. Two more J.R. TUGs have been put into service at other children's hospitals across the country. Aethon makes a donation to Make-A-Wish for every J.R. TUG that they install.
Jericho's wish was for a robot that delivers medication for children receiving treatments at the hospital. Jericho, a resident of Larkspur, California, had to take more than 4,000 pills as part of his chemotherapy treatment for leukemia. Jericho believed having a robot deliver medications might make the process less frightening for other children.
"It has been an honor to help fulfill Jericho's wish," said Aldo Zini, CEO, Aethon. "We are looking forward to seeing him again and showing him the birthplace of his TUG. Jericho has created a wonderful legacy. His wish will help make treatment easier for other children."
On Friday, April 11th, Jericho Rajninger and his family are visiting Aethon headquarters, where Jericho's special robot was created.
