"The Color Purple" to Make Appearance at State Fair of Texas

Updated: 7/2/2008

The Color Purple takes audiences on an incredible journey

The theatrical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Color Purple, will star as the Music Hall's Broadway musical during the 2008 State Fair of Texas.

Spanning more than 40 years, The Color Purple tells the inspiring story of Celie, a black woman born into a life of poverty and abuse. She is victimized by the man she believes is her father and mistreated by her mentally ill mother, and the child is plagued by her feelings of worthlessness. But despite her heart-wrenching hardships, Celie matures to find happiness, self-esteem and triumph through love and her bonds with other women.

Nominated for 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, The Color Purple features a stirring score of jazz, blues, gospel and ragtime music. The Color Purple was adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winner Marsha Norman.

Due to the mature content of the show, the performance is not recommended for children under 10. Please visit the musical's Web site, www.colorpurple.com, to help you determine if the musical is appropriate for your child.

The musical begins Sept. 30 and runs through Oct. 19. The theater is closed on Mondays.
