Ethiopia's Maregu Wins Peachtree Race in Atlanta

ATLANTA

Ethiopia's Terefe Maregu won the Peachtree Road Race on Friday, with Ethiopian or Kenyan runners sweeping the top 10 spots of the 10-kilometer event.

Nataliya Berkut of Ukraine was the women's winner in a field of 57,000, the nation's largest 10K race.

Maregu covered the 6.2 miles in 28 minutes, 30 seconds and was 4 seconds ahead Peter Kamais of Kenya. Daniel Kipkoech of Kenya was third in 28:38.

Berkut finished in 32:23, followed by Ashu Kasim of Ethiopia (32:36) and Pauline Wangui of Kenya (33:03). Eight of the top 10 women were from Ethiopia or Kenya.

The top U.S. man was Antonio Vega of St. Paul, Minn., in 11th place at 29:41. the top U.S. woman was Stephanie Herbst-Lucke of Atlanta, 11th place at 33:57.

In the wheelchair race, Kurt Fearnley of Australia won in 19:55. Edith Hunkeler of Switzerland finished first among the women in 24:30.
