BK2HK Week Celebrates "Sacrifice Our Wants For Others Needs Sunday"
Lorraine Jara, BK2HK
AUGUST 14, 2008 Today ends the 2008 "Be Kind To Humankind Week" celebration of kindness and people needing people. It should not end the practice of being kind to others daily.
After twenty years of promoting Be Kind to Humankind Week, I have to say that I would have never visualized it becoming what it is today.
There have been so many wonderful memories of when I first created BK2HK. I patiently typed letters out to anyone and everyone, including the President of the United States. I would then anxiously wait day by day checking my mailbox to see if anyone had written to me. Computers were rare in the homes in 1988, so I had to complete all of my correspondence by postal service or "snail mail." I was thrilled to receive letter after letter from folks all over the country! Now with the internet, I receive inquiries from folks all over the world.
Our final day "Sacrifice Our Wants for Other's Needs Sunday" is a beautiful reminder of what life is all about. Summed up in one word - giving. Giving of ourselves, our time and our efforts to be kind, giving to others everyday in anyway, be it small or large. Many may say, "I haven't the time" or "I'd rather be doing something else" or "What's in it for me?" or even "No one ever does anything for me."
I say take a little time, make a little time, rather than doing what you want to do. Sacrifice your day or even just a few hours to do something nice for somebody else. The inner feelings of joy, happiness, and a true sense of worth are unbelievable. You have to experience the act of giving unconditionally to feel this joy. It is a reward in and of itself.
I hope you have enjoyed our week-long celebration and will carry out acts of kindness all year!
