(US Army) :: Air Force Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt, of the 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group at Balad, Iraq, cradles a young girl as they both sleep in the hospital. In October 2006, a little girl's entire family was executed by Iraqi insurgents. The killers shot her in the head as well.

Due to the presence of the 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group in Balad, Iraq, the girl received treatment at a U.S. military hospital. Still, she continued to cry and moan inconsolably. That is, until Air Force Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt was able to comfort her. According to nurses at the medical facility, Gebhardt was the only one who can calm her down, so he spent numerous nights holding her while they both slept in a chair.

This story touched many hearts according to the responses received by "Be Kind to Humankind" Week. I personaly felt this little girl must have recovered beautifully with all of the tender loving care she received... and I felt that she would eventually be placed with a good family, perhaps other relatives. What a moving photo this is!

We should all look for ways to touch the hearts of those who are hurting, even when we feel as if we do not have much to offer. You might just be the comfort that someone needs, just as Sgt. Gebhardt was the comfort that this little Iraqi girl needed.
