Grocery chain donates $10 million and matches employee donations for Katrina

HappyNews Citizen JournalistAlbertsons Stores will donate $10 million in aid and match employee donations for victims of Hurricane Katrina.The company will match employees’ contributions up to $1 million.Albertsons support of local communities and youth activities dates back to the first store opened by Joe Albertsons in 1939. Each year Albertsons, one of the world’s largest food and drug retailers, commits a portion of its pre-tax earnings to charitable contributions.“The magnitude and scope of this incredible disaster demands that we rally to support our fellow Americans in need on the Gulf Coast,” said Larry Johnston, president, chairman, and CEO of Albertsons. For more than two decades Albertsons has also supported the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) through a myriad of special events and programs.Albertsons has also started an Earn Free Books Program with purchase which will end Sept. 16th. You can collect your own library of kids’ books by buying a combination of any two Pfizer or Kimberly-Clark participating brands. Participants send in receipt from store along with completed Earn Free Books Request Form which you can find on Albertsons.com and receive two free kids books. Buyers continue to purchase and collect a whole series of kids’ books. In support of this offer Albertsons will also be making book donations for less fortunate kids.In May Albertsons received a Promise to the Earth Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation.In 2003 Albertsons worked to raise public awareness of hunger relief programs and donated more than 23 million pounds of food and household goods to America’s Second Harvest food banks and other local hunger-relief programs nationwide. Albertsons continued its support of hunger relief through the FOOD FOR ALL Program. In 2003 the store gave $100,000 to America’s Second Harvest and also committed to holding food drives in the stores across the country to raise additional money and food donations for local food banks.Albertsons is also involved with the Community Partners Program, giving back to youth one shopping cart at a time. The company has linked the Partners card to the Preferred Savings card.
