British media help ask for aid for Niger
AUGUST 03, 2005By Roger Jones On the back of a $5 million injection of funds from French president Jacques Chirac the British media has asked Britons to donate much needed funds to the starving nation of Niger.
The British Broadcasting Corporation and commercially owned ITV aired frank appeals on television and radio to the British public to donate funds by a large group of charities which have grouped together to stop the starvation in the worlds’ second poorest nation.Funds to charity organizations dealing with the Niger crisis have increased since the British media started reporting heavily on the crisis a month ago. According to aid agency, Oxfam, claimed that a third of the population of Niger, 3.6 million people were starving. The appeal on British television August 2 asked for donations either online at http://www.dec.org.uk/ or via telephone by calling the Disasters Emergency Committee at 0870 60 60 900. (From the U.S: 011 44 870 60 60 900) The funds will go towards relief programs in the worst hit areas and will be purchase food, medicines, seed and animal fodder for the rural areas of Niger.
